The students and Ulteig employees created the structure using more than 1,000 cans of food that were donated to the Great Plains Food Bank in Fargo at the end of the competition. This year's event, which was originally slated for last spring before being postponed due to flooding, marked the fifth year for the design-and-build contest. Ulteig reached out to NDSU's engineering department seeking students to collaborate with, and the American Society of Civil Engineering chapter responded. Andrew Albrecht, an NDSU senior majoring in civil engineering and the chapter's service chair, said the organization had never participated in the competition before and was excited to be a part of the event."We were looking for something fun and something to do to help out in the community," Albrecht explained. "It was a good experience."The hourglass design - symbolizing that it's time to end hunger - came from Jeff Kale, Ulteig's senior marketing specialist, but he handed the idea over to Albrecht and the NDSU students to design it. In September, the team practiced building half of the structure to assess its structural integrity and made some tweaks to the design before testing again. On Oct. 15, the team gathered at West Acres Regional Shopping Center to build the structure, a task that took approximately two hours."I think (the students) had a good time ... they really got into it," Kale said.Kale said the team received a donation from N.D. Interior Designers and Ulteig employees, who contributed more than $700 by purchasing "Jeans Day" passes. The combined funds were used to purchase materials, which totaled more than $1,000. Ulteig consistently contributes to the American Society of Civil Engineering chapter's steel bridge and concrete canoe groups for their annual competitions, so employees were excited to contribute to the Canstruction event, Kale said. Employees could purchase a maximum of 10 passes for $1 each, but most employees gave more than the $10 limit.Ulteig's relationship with NDSU extends back to 1928, when Melvin Ulteig graduated with a mechanical engineering degree. Ulteig later was a member of the NDSU Alumni Association board, a position now held by Eric Michel, Ulteig's current president and CEO.

Ulteig Hires Pierson and Farnsworth

On Monday, October 24, Ulteig welcomed Mindy Pierson to Energy Services and Dan Farnsworth to Civil Services.Mindy joins the company as a Graduate Engineer in the Generation, Planning, and Renewable Energy market. The company was recently notified that it will be receiving this award for its work on the Runway 15-33 Reconstruction project at Harry Stern Field in Wahpeton, N.D. The ACPA selects award winners from all across the United States and Canada each year to recognize quality concrete pavement projects. The project that won Ulteig the Silver Award consisted of 42,500 square yards of 8" concrete pavement, 46,000 square yards of aggregate base and recycled asphalt millings, new runway edge lighting, 12,500 linear feet storm sewer and navigational aids. Ulteig addressed engineering, operational and financial challenges to make the project a success. Though many were worried about the impacts of closing the airport during construction, temporarily shutting down the runway to make the improvements saved both time and money, making the temporary closure extremely worthwhile. Associate Vice President of Ulteig's Aviation team Jeff Klein said the project made a significant impact on the community. "We are pleased with the success of the project," Klein said. "It provides the Wahpeton Airport Authority and airport users with a safe, durable runway and serves as a cornerstone for the regional economy."Corey Leinen, Ulteig's Onsite Field Inspector during the reconstruction, agreed. "The project is a great addition for a great community," Leinen said. Thirty-one projects were recognized for the 2011 ACPA awards. Ulteig Vice President Jon Scraper said winning this award is a testament to the type of high quality work being produced by Ulteig's Aviation team. "I'm proud to be recognized at the top of the industry with this important award," Scraper said.Harry Stern is home of Tri-State Aviation, a company that specializes in the restoration of military aircraft, including the P-51, Corsair, Hawker Sea Fury, TBM, and the only flying Japanese Zero of its kind in the world. Since these historical aircraft are not equipped with modern instrumentation, the concrete addition provides a more visible runway for the pilots and helps protect the treasured aircraft.

Ulteig Hires Howe and Mayers

On Monday, October 10, Ulteig welcomed Duane Howe to Energy Services and Chuck Mayers to Land Services. The MacKay Building project included a complete remodel of an existing 50,000-square-foot office/library building. The State of South Dakota now requires that all state-owned buildings earn a LEED® Silver status or higher. During the renovation, Ulteig delivered mechanical, electrical, and fire protection engineering services and implemented many energy efficiency enhancements into the building design. Specialists within the company assisted with LEED® calculations and documentation. The remodel of the MacKay Building included replacement of windows, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, electrical systems, and life safety systems. Some design choices contributing to LEED® Silver certification included daylight controls and occupancy sensors to reduce power used by lighting systems, water-conserving plumbing fixtures, energy recovery on exhaust air, and demand-controlled ventilation, among other features. Since Ulteig’s renovations, the MacKay Building now uses 17% less energy and 45% less water. In addition to the energy and water savings, the building also uses recycled materials. These renovations allowed the MacKay Building to meet the high performance green building standards mandated by the State of South Dakota. The total construction cost for the MacKay project was $3.7 million.

Ulteig Ranks 41 on Top 300 Engineering/Architectural Firms List

In its July 2011 issue, Building Design + Construction Magazine released its 2011 Giants 300 Report, which lists the top 300 engineering, architectural, and construction firms in the U.S. and Canada.
