Ulteig Engineers provided structural, electrical, and fire protection engineering services for this maintenance and storage facility for the new aircraft assigned to the Bismarck Army Aviation Support Facility (AASF). The entire facility was designed to comply with a silver rating in the National Guard's "Spirit System".
The building, architecturally designed by Tvenge Associates, PC, encompasses approximately 35,000 square feet of column-free floors, in spaces with approximately 30 feet of interior height. Openings of up to 90 feet long and 24 feet tall are provided for the hangar entrances. The electrical design included automatic lighting controls as well as fiber optics for telecommunications, power distribution for general receptacles and the mechanical systems, and a complete wiring system including fiber optics for telecommunications. A separate 120/208 volt, 400Hz distribution system was included to supply maintenance power to the aircraft. The facility is protected with an automatic fire alarm and smoke detections system and a UL listed lightning protection system. Fire suppression is provided throughout the aircraft storage bays using a high expansion foam system in conjunction with wet-pipe automatic sprinklers. A standard, wet-pipe sprinkler system is provided outside of the hangar bays. Ulteig supplied fully engineered construction documents for the fire suppression systems. Ulteig is the only firm in North Dakota, one of few firms in the nation with the capabilities and experience necessary to provide this level of engineering for fire suppression.
