Following the study for Water Storage and Distribution Facilities, authored by Ulteig Engineers in October of 2006, it was recommended that Moorhead Public Service (MPS) move forward with the installation of a 24" water transmission main to the City's south side. The recommendation was based on current and projected water demands on the East and South sides of the City.
One of the major challenges for this project was routing a large diameter water transmission main through developed areas and minimizing the amount of disruption to residential and commercial areas. In order to route the transmission main through Village Green Golf Course and avoid many obstacles Ulteig recommended directional drilling 1,200 feet of 30" diameter HDPE pipe. This alternative was cost effective because it minimized the impacts of costly site restoration due to open cutting and also allowed for a more direct route which reduced the amount of pipe required for the installation.
