The reconstruction of US Highway 83/South Broadway through Minot was a two-phased, Federally funded urban street project. Ulteig Engineers provided planning/environmental documentation, right-of-way and easement limits, relocation of affected businesses and the demolition plans for two buildings, traffic signal design, roadway alignment and lighting, sanitary sewer, hydrology and hydraulic analysis for the storm sewer system along with a 72" storm water tunnel under a railroad yard, retaining walls, preliminary and construction survey, construction observation, public meetings and media contact.
The first phase, constructed in 1997, widened 7th Avenue to 2nd Avenue from the existing four-lane section to five lanes and included a seven-lane section through the South Broadway/Burdick Expressway Intersection.
Phase two reconstructed 1.2 miles of South Broadway between 7th Avenue and 19th Avenue. The challenges of this project were the fact that two contracts were performed simultaneously and consisted of more than eight contractors on the job at any one time. All work was completed while maintaining traffic on this major north-south arterial street.
Phase II was awarded the American Consulting Engineering Companies of North Dakota Engineering Excellence Award and two North Dakota Ready Mix Products and Concrete Products, Inc. Excellence in Concrete awards.
